Making a collagraph plate begins with a piece of mount card.

The image is  drawn on the card and then a scalpel is used to cut into the surface, peeling away areas. The layer below the surface is absorbent and will take up the ink to give a darker area.

Texture is added by cutting shapes from wallpaper, tissue paper or adding other materials to the plate such as leaves, feathers, scrim etc.

Highlights are added using exterior PVA glue which will wipe clean once dry and the plate is prepared for printing.

The plate is then sealed with Shellac and allowed to dry thoroughly.
